COVID and Heaven — blurring the certainty - The Christian submit

by way of F. LaGard Smith, Voices Contributor | Monday, January 25, 2021

Did you examine in regards to the gunshot victims in Colorado whose deaths were listed as COVID deaths?  Or about these deadly bike accidents and nursing domestic falls, or the terrible man who landed on his head after slipping off a roof?  Why were these victims counted as COVID deaths easily as a result of they coincidentally had the coronavirus at the time of their unexpected loss of life?

As a former criminal legislation prof, i can assure you there's no manner that the defendant in a murder trial would succeed in arguing that the sufferer died of COVID when he died automatically from the shooting!  And insurers ought to relish the possibility of not having to pay out on unintentional death guidelines when death certificates list the reason for loss of life as COVID in place of a deadly motor vehicle break or industrial accident!

The horrific variety of specific COVID deaths is tragic sufficient with out artificially inflating the count.  (Please inform us it has nothing to do with COVID-related funding schemes in accordance with the numbers….)  The legitimate line from fitness departments is that together with COVID-19 on the death certificates of any individual who's established nice for the virus in the 30 days main up to their passing is "vital for public fitness surveillance."  (Hmmm….)  certainly, having COVID can lead, say, to sepsis, spiraling into respiratory failure and even a heart assault, so there's a way through which one may say that COVID is the pivotal reason behind death.  but gunshots, bike accidents, and falling off a roof!  When even the CDC acknowledges that handiest 6% of "COVID-connected deaths" were solely COVID deaths, what about the numbers we're given?  real, half-real, unfaithful?

With all that in mind, consider the funerals for these unlucky victims.  by the use of giving comfort and hope to the mourners, we are sure to hear the time-honored words, "We trust in the resurrection of the useless."  What can be extra primary?  This temporal world awaits the definitive point in time when the Lord returns from heaven; when the earth's useless get up at the Resurrection; and when — at the Judgment to come back — the "sheep and goats" are divided into their everlasting destinies (Mt. 25:31-46).  As we always verify, this three-half finale is creedal.

however, in pretty much the next breath, we hear, "Even now your loved one is in heaven, going for walks hand in hand with Jesus."  after which comes the entire (regularly humorous) focus on our dearly departed having a pretty good time up there, or lovingly searching down on us!  in fact?  Is that true, half-genuine, or unfaithful?  besides the fact that Paul's need to "go away and be with Christ" (Phil. 1:23) and the thief being with Jesus "these days in Paradise" (Lk. 23:forty three), something happened to the Resurrection?

I appreciate that there are largely-varying theological perspectives on lifestyles after loss of life.  Yet, one aspect looks certain: Flippant focus on what the lifeless are doing up in heaven is at best misleading, considering Scripture plainly tells us they're no longer there yet.  (When Lazarus changed into raised, he sparked no rumors about heaven!)  So, it's first things first.  God's sequence, not ours.

keen as we may be to usher our loved ones instantly into celestial joys, on how to heaven there are scheduled stops — together with the one we are likely to speak concerning the least.  because the Hebrews author reminds us (9:27), "it is appointed for man to die, and after that to face Judgment.  however we're "secure in the hands of Jesus," at dying we've yet to hear the master say (as in Jesus' parable), "smartly performed, good and trustworthy servant.  Enter into the thrill that anticipate you."

even if it be whatever as insignificant as misattributing COVID deaths, or doing an end-run around the Resurrection, in an period of rampant disinformation actuality takes on introduced magnitude.  A nation or church careless with lesser truths is likely to find even flagrant falsehoods easier to swallow.
