‘if you want to Enter existence, keep the Commandments’

Hierodeacon Rafael Misiaoulis, Theologian

The prosperous young man in these days's Gospel studying seems to have metaphysical considerations and considerable spiritual hobbies. His younger coronary heart burned for the elegant, the everlasting, the things to come back. He approached the Lord with zeal and with a genuine willingness to be taught. A want and flame had awakened inside him which pressured him to strategy Christ and ask Him here question: 'good instructor, what have to I do to inherit eternal existence?' The Lord replies: 'Why do you call me respectable, since you believe me to be a normal adult? No-one's absolutely decent apart from God on my own'.

Thereafter Jesus reminds the young man of the commandments of the legislation of Moses: don't commit adultery, don't kill, don't steal, don't bear false witness, honor your father and mother. Observance of the Lord's commandments is a basic and essential requirement for our salvation. We aren't saved basically by using believing. We also need to perform works. We should still be aware the phrases of the Lord: 'folks that have my commandments and preserve them are those who really love me' (Jn. 18, 21); and within the knowledge of Sirach: 'nothing is sweeter than to observe the Lord's instructions' (23, 27). The divine commandments are a unified entire and the one depends on the other. Non-observance of 1 betrays a sinful disposition a good way to show itself, within the incorrect circumstances, within the transgression against one other, or others. And also within the contempt and disdain for the divine legislations-Giver Himself.

'teacher, I've kept these commandments due to the fact that i was a baby'. 'Then', says the Lord, 'you're lacking just one element. sell all you've got and, when you consider that you want eternal existence, divide the proceeds among the poor and come and follow me'. As soon as he heard this, the younger man grew to become dejected, despondent and saddened. The intent become that he was very prosperous. He couldn't smash through the wall of his wealth. 'He grew fat, he became thick and wide: then he forsook the God that made him, and departed from God his Savior' (Deut. 32, 15). Then he realized how tricky it became to provide yourself over completely to God.

When Christ saw the younger man departing so disenchanted, He pointed out: 'How elaborate it is for those who have cash to enter into the kingdom of God. It's less difficult for a camel to circulate throughout the eye of a needle than it is for a wealthy person to enter the dominion of God'. When the people heard this they asked: 'neatly, in that case, who can also be saved?' Christ answered that what's past our personal restricted, human powers is attainable and viable via the Grace of God.

It's no longer adequate that you don't steal, you don't kill. You need whatever greater: to like. this is what Christ invited the prosperous younger man to do, but he didn't have the energy to achieve this. It's simplest people who love who obtain the unachievable. the place love prospers, Grace comes.

Our lifestyles is filled with examples akin to that of nowadays's rich younger man. We've all primary examples of prosperous americans who worship and venerate their possessions as if they have been god. and then, all of sudden, they lose everything and that they're out on the streets. We respect this dire condition when we sing in Church the ancient verse from the Psalms (33, eleven): 'The prosperous had been made poor and hungry, however those that are trying to find the Lord shall now not lack anything this is first rate'.

Christ is blunt with the prosperous man in the Gospel analyzing today. not to insult him, nor to punish him, however to help him, to display him his inadequate spiritual state. however the Gospel narrative also reveals whatever thing very crucial to us, too: the method wherein we should still strive spiritually. Christ tells us reasonably plainly, that any dependence on funds is idolatry which manipulates us, subjugates us and, within the end, controls us absolutely. The young man in today's Gospel loses everlasting existence. He preferred his wealth and adored his money greater. may also our personal choice be distinctive. may we use the perishable to purchase the imperishable, the transient the eternal, and through the suitable use of money, can also we enter into the kingdom of Heaven. Amen.
