one among my earliest reminiscences of life on a farm in south Monaghan is being part of the ritual of 'losing spuds' - sowing seed potatoes - within the spring.
As we made our means alongside the drills, our backs bent and our line of sight alternating between the areas that separated every 'drop' and the pathway forward, we knew instinctively that we have been shaping the produce of the yr ahead.
however for that to turn up, the seed in the potatoes we sowed needed to die as a way to provide us life.
In Holy Week we recall the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
For him to accomplish so first rate a work for our salvation, he had to die: "In all actuality I tell you, unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies it yields a prosperous harvest" (John 12:24).
On this respectable Friday, may we be reminded of our deserve to die to ourselves in order that we are able to deliver the existence and lightweight of Christ to others through a wealthy harvest of love and mercy.
